A Rich History |
Freeman Electric, Inc. |
In about 1911 J.P. Freeman sent his three sons, Jack, Jim, and Roy to electrical school for approximately two months. Upon returning from school the sons opened Freeman Electric Supply Co. As time went on Jack and Jim left to enter other areas of the electrical industry, which left Roy doing electrical wiring in the Independence area. Later Roy was severely burned with electricity, which effected his health for the rest of his life. For a number of years Roy was unable to do electrical work. By the mid-thirties, Roy's health had improved enough to allow him to again be active in the electrical industry. Roy's sons, E.J. "Bud" and Robert, worked with Roy until the beginning of WW II. Bud worked on National defense projects during the war while Robert served in the United States Navy. Roy did a small amount of electrical service during the war years, but couldn't do much because of material shortages. After WW II Bud purchased the business, now called Freeman Electric, from Roy. His purchase consisted of an old panel truck, a few tools, and a small amount of wiring materials. But Bud and his wife, Nina, soon began expanding the business. They began hiring people as the business grew and added services such as a retail store for walk-in trade offering appliances, lighting fixtures, and wiring materials for do-it-yourselfers. Bud began bidding larger commercial and industrial projects in Northeast Iowa. As the business outgrew one building after another, the location changed five times in 15 years. In 1960, Bud and Nina purchased the building the company occupied on Main Street in Independence. In 1969, Harold, the son of Bud and Nina, entered the business full-time after graduation from college. The same year the business was incorporated and now goes by Freeman Electric, Inc. In 1982, Harold took over as company president. In 2005, with Nina's health failing, Harold suggested she place the property for sale. Modern business methods and management techniques made the large facility unnecessary. On January 2, 2006, the sale was finalized. Immediately construction began on a new building. Freeman Technology Group's new home boasts a two story office and over 1200 sq. ft. of truck and equipment storage just Northeast of Independence. |
