Security Systems now has the capability to perform sensitivity testing on smoke detectors. We have purchased the Trutest 800 Smoke Detector Sensitivity Tester. This sensitivity tester sends a smoke aerosol through the vents of the detector to the sensing chamber, then measures smoke obscuration and feeds back information to the controller. All smoke detection systems need to be tested for sensitivity every two years. Systems that are TOO sensitive lead to many false alarms. While systems that are not sensitive enough may lead to late alarms or even NO alarms. Is that a risk that you would be willing to take? All inspectors and fire marshalls are starting to require sensitivity testing be performed in any building that is required to have a smoke detection system. Under the NFPA 72 1999 Table 7-2.2 Test Methods it states ". . . tests shall be performed to ensure that each smoke detector is within it's listed and marked sensitivity range . . ." Until recently, smoke detector tests have only been able to see if the system works or not. This new technology takes safety a step further. We urge anyone with a smoke detection system to call us and make your appointment for sensitivity testing. We can give quotes over the phone if you know how many smoke detector heads you have!
